Understanding the Inequalities
National data and local insights show that people from Black, Asian, and ethnic minority backgrounds often face unique challenges when it comes to cancer care:
Lower Screening Uptake: Participation rates for bowel, breast, and cervical cancer screenings are significantly lower among some ethnic minority groups due to language barriers, cultural stigma, lack of awareness, or fear.
Delayed Diagnosis: Late-stage diagnosis remains a major concern. When symptoms are caught late, treatment options become more limited and outcomes worsen.
Prostate Cancer Risk: Black men face a 1 in 4 lifetime risk of developing prostate cancer—double the risk for white men—yet awareness of this risk remains disproportionately low.

Catching cancer early saves lives. Screening invitations sent by the NHS are not just routine letters—they are vital check-ups designed to detect changes before symptoms even appear.
Here is what you can do today:
Know Your Body: If you notice unusual lumps, unexplained weight loss, persistent pain, changes in bowel habits, or bleeding, contact your GP surgery straight away.
Attend Your Screenings: If you receive a cervical, breast, or bowel screening invitation, please take it up. You can request a female clinician for cervical screening or ask for an interpreter if English is not your first language.
Talk to Your Loved Ones: Break the stigma by talking openly about health with your family, elders, and neighbors.
