#AskAboutAsthma 2026: Supporting Children and Young People Across Brent

As children and young people across Brent return to school after the summer holidays, health experts warn of the annual 'September Spike' - a period when asthma attacks and hospital admissions among children rise significantly.

To help protect local families, the #AskAboutAsthma campaign returns from 7 to 11 September 2026. Here at Healthwatch Brent, we are encouraging residents, parents, carers and local community organisations to get involved, learn the basics and support young people living with asthma. #BeHeardInBrent

Meet the Brent Health Matters Team in Harlesden

As part of the campaign week, Brent Health Matters will be out in the community to offer advice and support.

If you are a parent, carer, or simply want to know more about managing asthma, pop by to speak with the team in person.

The Four Key Asks

The #AskAboutAsthma campaign focuses on four simple, life-saving steps to ensure every child with asthma is properly supported:

  1. Get an Asthma Action Plan in place – Every child with asthma should have a written plan outlining their daily medicines and what to do if their symptoms worsen.
  2. Understand how to use inhalers correctly – Using an inhaler properly (and with a spacer where appropriate) ensures the medicine reaches the lungs effectively.
  3. Schedule an annual asthma review – Regular check-ups with a GP or nurse are essential, as is a review following any asthma attack.
  4. Consider air quality and lung health – Indoor and outdoor air pollution can trigger asthma symptoms; taking steps to reduce exposure helps keep young lungs healthy.

Local groups and community leaders play a vital role in sharing trusted health information and guiding residents to support. Here is how your organisation can make a difference:

  • Share Campaign Messages: Help spread awareness across your networks and social media using #AskAboutAsthma, or display campaign posters in your community venues.
  • Learn More: Sign up for free online webinars or complete the free national Tier 1 Asthma Training to build your skills in supporting children and young people with asthma.
  • Become an Asthma Community Coach: We are looking for local leaders and passionate community members to help teach others about asthma basics and keep Brent families informed.
