Cool Spaces in Brent & Tips in Hot Weather

While many of us look forward to the warmer summer months, periods of high temperatures can pose real risks to our health. Hot weather can cause individuals to become seriously unwell due to overheating, dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

To help our community stay safe, healthy, and comfortable, we have gathered the latest guidance from Brent’s Director of Public Health, Brent Council, and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) on how to beat the heat and where to find relief locally.

We are here to help you understand the best ways to protect ourselves, loved ones and our community in hot weather.

How to Find a 'Cool Space' Near You

If your home becomes uncomfortably hot, or you are out and about during a heatwave, London utilises an official network of Cool Spaces. These are designated public indoor and outdoor areas designed to provide a sheltered, temperate-controlled environment where residents can rest, cool down and access free drinking water.

  • The London Cool Spaces Map: The Mayor of London’s office manages the authoritative, city-wide directory of cool spaces. Because the nearest or most accessible space to you might actually sit just across the borough boundary, residents are encouraged to use the interactive map to find their closest location.
  • Do you run a local space? Voluntary, community, and faith organisations in Brent that have a suitable air-conditioned or sheltered venue meeting the Mayor's criteria (such as seating and water access) can apply to register their facility.

UKHSA Top Tips: Actions to Stay Safe in Hot Weather

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) recommends practising these core daily habits during hot spells to protect yourself and your household:

  • Time Your Activities: If you need to engage in physical exertion, exercise, or walk your dog, plan these activities during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening.
  • Manage Your Indoor Temperature: Keep your home cooler by closing windows and drawing blinds or curtains in rooms that directly face the sun.
  • Hydrate Properly: Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day and limit your alcohol intake, which accelerates dehydration.
  • Avoid Peak UV Hours: Try to stay out of direct sunlight between 11:00am and 3:00pm, when solar radiation and UV levels are at their highest.
  • Sun Protection: If you must go out in the midday sun, seek shade, cover up with loose clothing, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, and apply sunscreen liberally and frequently.
  • Look Out for Others: Check in on family members, friends, and neighbours—particularly elderly residents or those with underlying health conditions—who may be at a higher risk of becoming unwell. If you are vulnerable, ask a trusted person to check on you.
